What is “Functional Strength Training” anyway?

Put simply, functional strength training is resistance training that prioritizes injury prevention, healthspan and movement longevity. Functional strength and conditioning is designed with the goal of improving an individuals ability to perform all their daily tasks with as much force and as little discomfort as possible. Weather you are an elite professional athlete or someone that wants to be able to carry the groceries pain free and prevent falls in later years, functional strength training and conditioning is the ultimate training program.

“Functional strength training involves performing work against resistance in such a manner that the improvements in strength directly enhance the performance of movements so that an individual's activities of daily living are easier to perform. Simply stated, the primary goal of functional training is to transfer the improvements in strength achieved in one movement to enhancing the performance of another movement by affecting the entire neuromuscular system.” -Cedric X. Bryant

Strength Training does not have to be complicated

Mike Boyle has pioneered and established functional strength training from using hyper practical, extremely rational and simple thinking. Using the joint by joint approach, unilateral loading (single leg) and core stability his resistance training prevents injuries first and creates performance improvements that translate to the game second. By moving and loading the body in ways that prioritize the joints, the individual is able to sustain high intensity training and push the body into adaptation. In the human body stability joints always follow mobility joints and vice versa. For example the ankle is a mobility joint, which precedes the knee, a stability joint, which precedes the hip, a mobility joint, which precedes the lumbar spine, a stability joint. We want to make sure that mobility joints are mobile and stability joints are stable, otherwise pain, discomfort and injury can occur. I was certified as a Strength Coach by Mike Boyle and his CFSC level 1 program in 2020 and I look forward to helping you move better and feel healthier than ever.
